Skills & Capacity Building

Skills that make self-reliance a realistic prospect.

Skills development, knowledge and capacity-building initiatives designed to improve productivity and promote self-reliance.

Introduction

From assistance to independence

The Foundation provides human capacity-building programmes designed to equip individuals with the skills, knowledge and opportunities that enable them to become confident, productive and self-reliant.

This is the work that changes a person’s relationship with support altogether. Assistance meets a need as it arises; capacity changes what a person is able to do about the next one.

The Need

Why capacity building matters

People living with disadvantage are not short of capability. They are short of the means to apply it — a skill that is recognised, the confidence to offer it, and an opportunity in which to use it.

Where those three things come together, the effect extends well past the individual. A person who can earn supports a household, and a household that is not in crisis can keep its children in school and attend to its health.

Assistance meets a need as it arises. Capacity changes what a person can do about the next one.

Our Contribution

What the Foundation seeks to contribute

These are the outcomes this area of work is designed to move towards.

Practical knowledge

Knowledge that can be applied immediately rather than knowledge held in the abstract.

Skills development

Capability that is genuinely useful in the settings where people actually live and work.

Confidence

The self-belief without which a skill is rarely offered, let alone used.

Productivity

Support towards being able to contribute, earn and take part.

Self-reliance

A shift away from dependence and towards making one’s own decisions.

Sustainable opportunity

Openings that continue to matter long after a programme has ended.

Our Approach

How we approach this work

Four commitments that shape how this work is carried out.

Values guiding this work

  • Empowerment
  • Service
  • Sustainability
See all eight core values
  1. Build on what is already there

Capacity building starts from the ability a person already has, rather than treating them as a blank page.

  2. Useful before impressive

Priority goes to skills and knowledge with a realistic application in the person's own setting.

  3. Confidence is part of the curriculum

Capability that a person does not believe in will not be used.

  4. Measured by independence

The intended outcome is a person who needs the Foundation less, not more.
