Introduction
Removing what stands between a child and a classroom
The Foundation provides free qualitative education and access to learning opportunities for disadvantaged and underserved people. The principle behind it is straightforward: where the obstacle to education is cost or circumstance rather than ability, that obstacle can be removed.
This is the area of work everything else tends to lead back to. A person who has been able to learn is better placed to protect their health, to acquire a skill, and to recover from a setback without losing everything.
The Need
Why access to education matters
Interrupted schooling is rarely a temporary problem. A child who leaves the classroom because of cost, illness or family circumstance often does not return, and the disadvantage travels with them into adult life and into the next generation.
Education is also about more than qualifications. It shapes how confidently a person can make decisions, understand their entitlements, manage their health and take part in the life of their community. Where it is missing, disadvantage becomes difficult to reverse.
Where the obstacle to education is cost rather than ability, that obstacle can be removed.

Cost should not be the deciding factor
Where the Foundation can act, ability to pay is not permitted to determine whether a child continues to learn.

Effort is directed towards people and communities who are furthest from existing provision, not those easiest to reach.

Learning is wider than schooling
Personal development, knowledge and confidence are treated as part of education, not as extras.

Continuity over gestures
Support is planned so that a person is not left worse off when a period of assistance comes to an end.
